Our Umpires & Scorers

The unsung heroes of Warnford.

Every match at Warnford depends on two things the players rarely think about until they need them: a correct decision from the square, and an accurate record of what happened. The Hampshire Hogs are fortunate — genuinely and unusually fortunate — to have a team of umpires and scorers whose quality visitors remark upon, season after season.

The Umpires

Between them, our umpires stand in the vast majority of Hogs fixtures each season — sometimes in tandem, sometimes alone, and always with the patience, authority and good humour the role demands. Our late Honorary Secretary, Rob White, captured it perfectly in the 2025 Year Book when he wrote that he loved the compliments the club receives for having proper umpires. They are not a given at this level of the game. They are a mark of the Hogs’ standards.

What distinguishes our umpires is not merely their knowledge of the Laws — though that is thorough — but their understanding of the spirit in which the Hogs play cricket. They set the tone. Captains and players follow their lead. Visiting sides leave Warnford with a favourable impression of the club in no small part because of them.

The Scorers

Behind every result, and every statistic in the Year Book, lies hours of careful, concentrated work at the scorer’s table. The Hogs are fortunate to have a dedicated team who give their time across the full season — often travelling to away fixtures — to ensure the record is always right.

Richard Willmett

Lead Scorer & Scorers' Coordinator

Richard stands at the heart of our scoring operation, not only scoring more Hogs matches than anyone else but taking on the organisation of the entire scoring rota. His commitment across the season — senior fixtures, O40s games, and the full sweep of Hog Week — is remarkable. He combines meticulous accuracy with an easy-going presence at the scorer's table that puts everyone at ease. The club owes him a great deal.

Nigel Beesley

Club Records, Statistics & Historical Performances

Nigel has taken on one of the most important custodial roles in the club — the management and maintenance of the Hampshire Hogs' complete statistical record. This means not only keeping the current season's results, averages and leading performances up to date, but building and preserving the historical archive: record wins and defeats, batting partnerships, bowling performances, and the milestones and landmarks that tell the story of 139 years of Hogs cricket. It is work that matters for generations to come.

"Without accurate scoring, cricket history is just memory — and memory is unreliable."

A Note of Thanks

On behalf of all the players, the committee, and the members, the Hampshire Hogs extends its warmest thanks to every one of them.

If you would like to join the umpiring or scoring team at Warnford, please get in touch with the Honorary Secretary. Both roles are hugely rewarding — and, on a good day at Warnford, there are few better places to spend a summer afternoon.
